WARNING: Cyber Criminals Continue to Find New Ways to Wipe Out Your Bank Account
PHISHING (pronounced fishing and also referred to as brand spoofing or carding) is an online slang term for the act of sending out e-mails that falsely claim to be a legitimate company in an attempt to scam the recipient into surrendering private information such as bank account numbers, credit card numbers, social security numbers, and passwords. This information is then used to conduct identity theft, credit card fraud, or other crimes against the user.
One huge phishing scam involved e-mails from an eBay look-alike claiming that the user’s account was about to be suspended. It then instructed the user to click on a link in the e-mail to go to a web site where they could input their credit card to keep their account active. Since it is very easy for these criminals to construct a web site that looks like the legitimate company they are mimicking, hundreds of people got tricked into entering their credit cards.
What You Should Do Now To Protect Yourself
- Make sure you don’t click on ANY strange e-mails, especially if it asks you to update or give out your bank account information. You can sometimes check the validity of an embedded email by mousing over the link, some programs will show where the link is going to take you. If you don't recognize the domain name, don't click on it.
- Make certain your anti-virus software, spam filters, and patches are updated while running a strong firewall. Firewalls work not only by preventing hackers from directly accessing your system but also by preventing information from LEAVING your network. That way, even if you happen to get this Trojan on your system, a strong firewall would not allow it to transmit your bank account information back out to a hacker.
